Adult Summer Reading Club reviews

From Elaine Pasquali

The Christie Caper / Carolyn G. Hart

Annie Darling, owner of the Death on Demand bookstore, co-chairs a three day convention of renown authors to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Agatha Christie’s birth. Mystery and murder plague the attendees and Annie, her husband Max, and a few authors set about to unmask the murderer. There is a cast of 26 characters. Hart lists the characters at the beginning of the book. Despite this, the large number of characters is confusing. Hart also refers to Christie novels in almost every conversation, I found this distracting, especially if I hadn’t read the book . This said, the ending makes the book worth reading.

Murder at Madingley Grange / Caroline Graham

Ms. Graham is a British author. If she had been French, I would have characterized this book as a French farce. Simon and Laurel Hannaford stage a mystery weekend for paying guests at their absent great-aunt’s estate. Is a real murder afoot or is it all part of the planned weekend? Guests act outrageously, fall in and out of love, threaten and argue with one another. Three surprises are revealed at the very end of the story. Try it; you might like it. I did.
