Summer Reading Club reviews

From Dana Cohen

Title/Author
A Guide For The Perplexed / Dara Horn
This book is composed of several intertwining stories that span the course of 800 years. From a glimpse at the life of Maimonides to the explorations of Solomon Schechter to the modern-day internet-connected era, this book examines themes of memory, meaning, sibling rivalry, and relationships. I found it to be a bit of a slow read, however enjoyed figuring out how the stories come together at the end.

Title/Author
Leaving Time / Jodi Picoult

This book focuses upon a 13 year old girl’s extensive search for her mother, a renowned elephant researcher, who disappeared over a decade ago. She is both spirited and unrelenting, and she has assembled a search team comprised of a psychic and a former police detective. The point of view of each chapter varies amongst these characters and helps to piece together this mystery (though I still was unable to figure out the cliffhanger ending).

I learned a great deal about elephants while reading this book, and have gained a much better appreciation for this amazing species of animal.

I highly recommend the audio book version – the voice actors were fabulous and it made for a truly engaging experience.
