Summer Reading Club Review: Ascent into Hell

From Elaine Pasquali

Title: Ascent into Hell

Author: Andrew Greeley

This prolific sociologist, author and Jesuit priest departs from his usual novel and mystery formats.   Ascent into Hell is the story of a priest and nun who leave their religious vocations and marry each other. The transformation in each of them is dramatic; they each devolve into the depths of despair and loneliness. In a personal afterward, Greeley explains the symbolic religious nature of this novel. In his own words, “There is not a character or incident in my story, I think, without a scriptural counterpart…” Intense and riveting reading.
