Summer Reading Club Review: On The Beach

From Dana Cohen

Title: On The Beach

Author: Nevil Shute

I listened to this as an audio book during my commute to work. Engaging and depressing all rolled into one. It is a post-apocalyptic book from the 1950’s about everyday people from Australia who are awaiting their inevitable death from the slowly-spreading fallout of nuclear war the year prior. The juxtaposition between everyday life and this amorphous impending doom is both striking and haunting.

  1. When I was a teenager I saw this movie. I couldn’t fall asleep that night, lay curled under my blankets waiting for the bomb to wipe out NYC & LI!
