Mane Squeeze

From Jody Bassuk
author: Laurenston, Shelley
Mane Squeeze
Very enjoyable.  Told with a sense of humor, this is the story about a honey loving bear shifter, Lock,  and his relationship with a half tiger, half
lion, shifter, Gwen.  Lock finds it peaceful to tickle his toes and Gwen has a lot of mother problems.  I like this author. The main character in this  book is Gwen.  Her best friend Blayne is the main character in Beast Behaving Badly—which just came out recently.  Some of the  characters in this book were in the author’s previous book: Mane Attraction.  It’s fun revisiting previous characters and seeing what they’re up to.  I recommend this whole series….although you don’t have to read them in any particular order.

Flirt

From Nancy Mathieu
author: Brown,Tracy- K’wan- Mitchell,Angel
Flirt
This Book consists of three short stories. I loved all three. The first story called ” Flirting with Disaster” by Tracy Brown is about a young lady
who meets a man on a ferry. They begin a conversation and end up meeting everyday on the same ferry ride. The man seems too good to be  true. He advises her that he goes to school during the day and works at night for transit. They start dating and he wines and dines her, spoiling  her rotten. She was also having a casual relationship with a another guy on the side. What she will find out at the end is that the guy is
obsessed with her and lied to her about everything. He even found out about the other guy and murdered him. Great story, kept my interest the  whole time.
The second story titled “Wild Cherry” by K’wan is about two women who are both being abused by their boyfriends. The women run into each  other and realize they know each other from when they were little. After talking for a while about their situations, they decide the best way to  solve both their problems is by killing each others partners. Everything gets crazy from there!
The last story is called “Twice in a Lifetime ” by Angel Mitchell. This story is the craziest of them all. At first I was not happy with the way the  story was going because it was about a girl who fell in love with a man who turns out to be her half-brother. I continued reading and was really  starting to enjoy it because there were some strange twists in the story. The ending was disappointing and alittle odd.  This was my least favorite of the three short stories.

The Christmas Box

From Charlene Muhr
author: Evans, Richard Paul
The Christmas Box
A few months ago, I went to a library conference and attended a lecture by Richard Paul Evans.  I was so moved by his talk that I purchased his book and had it autographed.  He wrote and self-published the Christmas Box in 1993, a Christmas story that he had written for his children.  The Christmas Box is a touching story of the real meaning of Christmas.  A couple, Richard and Keri, and their daughter, Jenna, are hired as caretakers for an elderly and ailing widow, Mary, who resides in a Victorian mansion.  It’s not long before Richard and his family become very fond of Mary.  As the holiday approaches, Mary is concerned about Richard’s obsession for success and his failure to recognize the emotional needs of his family.  One day, Richard discovers an ornate, heirloom box that contains love letters and is the key to a secret that Mary is holding close to her heart. This is guaranteed to be a tear jerker.

The Other Wes Moore: One Name Two Fates

From Rita Gross
author: Moore, Wes
The Other Wes Moore: One Name Two Fates
The author was born in Baltimore, just blocks away from another young man with the same name.  They share many of the same experiences and life situations, growing up without fathers in a time of rampant drug violence.  The author became a Rhodes Scholar, served in the United States Armed Forces, was White House Fellow and today is a prominent businessman. The other Wes Moore is serving a life sentence for armed robbery and murder.
These men’s stories are told in parallel narratives, showing us step by step the paths their lives followed.  What were the defining moments that led to the divergence?  What were the choices that led to their ultimate fates?  Who in their lives influenced their behavior?  What role does one’s environment play?  This book describes the lives of a generation of young, urban Black teenagers and raises many questions about the choices we make early in life and their ultimate outcomes.
